Chance to boost your numbers skills

Help and advice are on offer this week for people keen to build their skills in using numbers.

National Numeracy Day will be marked in Orkney with a drop-in event at Kirkwall Town Hall and Community Centre on Wednesday from 10am to 4pm.

“We’re aware that many adults would like to sharpen up their numeracy skills,” said Chrissie Matthews, from The Learning Link, part of Orkney Islands Council’s education, leisure and housing service.

“Numbers play a big part in all of our lives. But people can find themselves overwhelmed by bills, confused by bank charges and left wondering if they can assist their children with their homework.

“Many would like to improve their skills — for household budgeting or to improve their career and education prospects, for instance.”

Chrissie added: “This event is all about providing help and advice. There will be plenty on offer to bring you a step closer to building your own or your family’s confidence in using numbers.

“People of all ages are welcome and can drop in anytime during the day. Some might like to try a numeracy challenge to test their skills — or use some of the apps and online resources that can help. If you’d like to bring your children along, there will be plenty of fun activities for them as well.”

The event is free of charge. There will be a free draw for prizes donated by The Old Library, William Shearer and Tesco — and refreshments on offer donated by the Co-op.
