Mackerel news welcomed

The news that mackerel has returned to the ‘Fish to Eat’ list has been described by Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael as evidence that UK and EU conservation efforts are working.

His comments come after the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) promoted mackerel caught in the UK, EU and Norway to “fish to eat” on their traffic-light ratings system. Mackerel caught by Icelandic fleets remain listed as the least sustainable choice.

Commenting, Mr Carmichael said: “Our seas are an invaluable resource and we have a responsibility to ensure that stock levels are protected for future generations.

“Earlier in the year, we finally reached a quota agreement with the EU, Norway and the Faroe Islands which would protect mackerel stocks. That deal raised concerns amongst the local pelagic fleet and has to be monitored closely. The recovering stocks means that all signs are pointing towards a healthy future for our vital industry.

“That deal is time limited and we will continue to keep an eye on how it impacts both stocks and the industry. When the deal expires, we will need to negotiate a deal that works for everyone.

“Iceland have shown a willingness to return to the negotiating table. I hope that they shall see fit to do so when talks resume in October.”
