McArthur calls for restoration of ferry sailings

Orkney MSP Liam McArthur called on the Scottish Government to reverse cuts in the number of sailings between Stromness and Scrabster during a debate on Scotland’s festivals in the Scottish Parliament.

Mr McArthur said: “The richness and vibrancy of Orkney’s festivals are widely recognised and help make the islands such as wonderful place to live and work.

“However, these festivals are also critical to attracting visitors to Orkney and stimulating the local economy.  With events now held through much of the year, they have helped to extend the ‘shoulders’ of the tourist season.

“That is why it is so disappointing that we have seen short sighted cuts in the number of sailings between Scrabster and Stromness.  Scottish Ministers must look again at this move in the interest of helping support festivals as well as the wider economy in Orkney.”
