McArthur welcomes return to local eye tests for diabetic drivers
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has welcomed clarification from the DVLA that diabetic drivers in the county will be able to continue having eye tests done in the islands, rather than travel to Dingwall, as had previously been proposed.
The DVLA has confirmed that an agreement had been reached between Specsavers, who have the national contract with DVLA, and Clarks Optometrists in Kirkwall that will enable the latter to carry out the tests for those in Orkney who require them.
Mr McArthur said: “Over the summer, a number of constituents expressed anger to me at the prospect of having to travel to Dingwall for eye tests they required in order to be able to carry on driving. The problem arose after the DVLA signed a contract with Specsavers to undertake this work nationwide. Unfortunately, no-one appeared to spot that Specsavers don’t have a permanent presence or the equipment in Orkney to fulfil the terms of this contract on behalf of those with diabetes.”
He added: “Thankfully a solution now appears to have been found, whereby Clarks Optometrists will be contracted to carry on performing these special tests at no cost to the individuals concerned. I welcome the swift action that has been taken and the fact that drivers in Orkney will continue to receive the level of service they deserve.”
