New cardboard recycling skip at Cursiter
A new cardboard recycling container is now in operation at the Orkney Island Council’s household waste and recycling centre (HWRC) at Cursiter Quarry in Firth.
It’s the first time cardboard recycling for households has been available at the Cursiter HWRC, where you can also recycle cans (aluminium and steel), glass, paper, textiles (clothes and shoes), garden waste, household batteries, scrap metal, vehicle batteries, waste electrical and electronic equipment, waste oil, tetra pak cartons, fluorescent tubes and energy bulbs, and plastic bottles.
Household cardboard can also be recycled at the council’s HWRC facilities at Hatston (Kirkwall), St Margarets Hope, Garson (Stromness) and Bossack (Tankerness).
The public are reminded to squash boxes as flat as possible and to remove any plastic film / tape or polystyrene prior to depositing in the skip. Further please ensure clean cardboard only is recycled, eg card contaminated with food or oil cannot be recycled so should be placed into the residual waste skips on site.

Commercial waste is not permitted at Cursiter and other Household Waste and Recycling Centres – it must be taken to Chinglebraes Waste Transfer Station. Inert waste (e.g. stones, soil, etc.) must be taken to Bossack Landfill Site.
