Opening of new swimming pool pushed back to May
Orkney’s new swimming pool looks set to open to the public in May.
According to the OIC, the date has been pushed back slightly to allow the replacement of a small area of mosaic tiling in the smaller leisure pool. Delaying the opening of the pool will allow for delivery of new tiles plus the necessary remedial works.
Alan Moar, project director for the council’s Schools Investment Programme, said: “We’re disappointed that a further unexpected delay has been added to the pool project, however it is unavoidable, unfortunately. The tiling had been damaged due to shrinkage of the concrete screed as it has dried underneath the tiles – whilst it is relatively easily rectified it has delayed the filling of the pool, by four weeks.
“I know that the public are keen to start using the new pool but it’s crucially important that everything is 100 per cent right before the facility is opened.”
