Orkney FC hope to complete Jock Mackay Cup dream

Two goals from Chris Hellewell and a Mark Berry header secured Orkney’s place in the Jock Mackay Cup Final, beating Halkirk 3-2.

Lifting the Jock Mackay Cup is the dream Orkney Football Club could make a reality this Saturday, as they aim to finish their 2016/17 season with a flourish.

Standing in the islanders path to cup glory are Tain St. Duthus who, like Orkney, are aiming to get their hands on the Jock Mackay Cup for the first time.

Winning the cup would represent a third successive season with silverware for Orkney, who finished 17 points ahead of Tain in the North Caledonian League.

It is a match which Orkney will start as heavy favourites.

Should Orkney perform to their capabilities, it would leave them with a “good chance” said manager Charlie Alway.

“From our point of view, we’ve just got to concentrate on what we can do and try and play, and show a level of commitment which is at a level that they can’t get to. If the guys all work really hard, and do what they can do, then I would say we’ve got a good chance.”

Tain boss Stuart Ross appeared to dismiss suggestions that Orkney would start the match as heavy favourites, focusing on the results between the two sides during the course of the season.

“Orkney came down to Tain and beat us 2-1. We returned up to Orkney and broke a 22-month unbeaten run for the guys up there on their own soil, so I think it is more evenly matched.”

Having been in phenomenal form of late, Orkney are set to travel south with a near full-strength side. Goalkeeper Cameron McConnachie is set to return to the side following suspension, however captain DJ Moffat is carrying a knock and may only be fit enough for a place on the bench.

The match is set to kick-off at 12.45pm at Invergordon’s Recreation Ground.
