Orkney netballers set to do battle for Scottish Cup glory during weekend of sport
Two Orkney athletes will take centre stage in the battle to land one of Scotland’s most prestigious netball prizes on Saturday.
The Scottish Cup Final is an all-Edinburgh affair, —with Edinburgh Onyx taking on Edinburgh University ‘A’, — but uniquely, two Orcadians will take their places on either side of the court in the showpiece finale.
Bev Campbell and Kirstie Burns both say that a Scottish Cup win would represent a significant achievement in their sporting careers, as Campbell’s Onyx and Burns’ university side eye the title for the first time.
The match is set to start at 3.50pm.
Four first-round ties of The Orcadian Parish Cup is set to be completed over the weekend. Stromness and Westray meet at the Market Green at 1pm on Saturday, with the scores poised at 2-2 from the first-leg, while starting at the same time, South Ronaldsay attempt to turn a 3-1 deficit around as they host Sanday.
Sunday sees two more ties take place, with an all-West Mainland tie between Firth and Birsay in Firth at 3pm, with the scores standing at 1-1. Holm, who hold a 2-1 advantage, will look to book their spot in the next round in the last game of the day, hosting Deerness at 7pm.
Meanwhile, people are encouraged to take to the water on Saturday as Orkney Sailing Club holds a ‘try-a-sail’ day.
All ages, including families, should pre-book via the club’s website, and an experienced team of sailors and safety boats will be in operation. It is the club’s aim to ensure the day is a good, fun, safe introduction to enjoying Orkney’s waters.
Elsewhere, youngsters from Orkney will travel to the Scottish Youth Bouldering Championships, while swimmers will also cross the Pentland Firth for competition against their Thurso counterparts.
The county’s clay pigeon club is holding a 50 Sporting shoot on Sunday at 10.30am, while also on Sunday, motocross racing will take place at Heddle Hill in Finstown.
