Poison reminder to retailers

New laws come into force on March 1, which will affect retailers who sell products containing non-medicinal poisons.

At the moment retailers who sell products like high-strength drain and oven cleaners have to register with the OIC and obtain a licence. As part of a Government drive to reduce on red tape this requirement is being abolished.

This means that:

  • If you currently sell the products and your licence is due to expire then you won’t need to re-register or pay a renewal fee but the Council will still retain your name on a Poisons List meantime.
  • If you don’t sell these products at the moment but want to start, then you don’t have to register or pay a fee.

Any queries can be directed to the council’s environmental health team on 873535 or email env.health@orkney.gov.uk
