Police urge driver caution in adverse weather
Police are reminding drivers to remain cautious in adverse weather conditions, following this morning’s snowfall.
According to police, they have attended a number of incidents on the roads across the Highlands and Islands within the past 24 hours, however, there has been no recent incidents flagged up in Orkney.
Road users are being reminded to take the weather conditions into account when planning their journey and that, when the road is wet, covered in snow or icy, it can make a considerable difference to grip and in particular stopping distances, which will be greatly increased.
When dealing with ice, it is advised that drivers should drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible; accelerate and brake very gently.
Folk are also being advised to check the forecast before travelling and to ensure their vehicle is in good condition and ready for the roads.
Drivers are also asked to be on alert as it can be more difficult to see other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, in adverse weather conditions.
