Remember, remember, the fifth of November . . .
The annual bonfire and fireworks display, organised by the Rotary Club of Orkney on behalf of Kirkwall and St Ola Community Council, takes place at the Peedie Sea this evening, Saturday.
The fire will be lit at 6.45pm by Bryan Taylor, representing Kirkwall and St Ola Community Council, and Bob Mackenzie, the Rotary Club’s president. Kirkwall City Pipe Band will play from 7pm and the firework display will start at 7.15pm.
The organisers are hoping for a large turnout, with profits from the event going to support local charities.
Access to the site is via Pickaquoy Road, with some of the path network around the Peedie Sea closed.
Meanwhile, out in Stromness, the bonfire and fireworks display will get under way, at the Coplands Dock car parking area, at 7pm.
As part of an ongoing effort to preserve a local tradition youngsters are, once again, invited to bring along their “pops” – carved and decorated turnip heads.
There will be prizes given for the best pops, with categories for the best in groups toddler to nursery; P1 to P4 and P5 to P7.
The judging of the pops will begin at 6.30pm.
