Orkney has been named the UK’s most romantic destination, as part of a series of awards organised by publishers Mills & Boon.

The Romantics Awards were set up by Mills & Boon to celebrate the UK’s most romantic things and cover everything from wedding venues, gifts and experiences, to destinations, entrepreneurs and real life heroes and heroines.

A recent public vote on the Mills & Boon website attracted thousands of nominations, with Orkney, Bath and the Lake District proving the most popular destinations for lovers.

The three finalists went head to head at an awards ceremony in London last night, with Orkney selected as category winner by a panel of judges from the romantic fiction community.

Kirsty Mainland, chairwoman of the Orkney Tourism Group, said: “Everyone here in Orkney is absolutely over the moon with this result. Being involved in the Mills & Boon Romantics Awards has been enormous fun and generated some lovely publicity for Orkney, a place that’s always been a favourite with romantics.

“To win the award is a real bonus and we hope it will encourage even more people to come and spend some time amongst our wonderful, magical islands.”
