Russian tribute to Arctic Convoy veterans

A delegation from Russia visited Orkney today where they paid tribute and respects to those who served in the Arctic Convoys.

Earlier today a party of around 70 people took part in a special wreath laying ceremony and service at the Arctic Convoys memorial in Lyness, to mark 70 years since the Second World War ended in Europe.

Andrey Pritsepov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Edinburgh, accompanied by Vice-Consul Timofey Kunitskiy travelled to Orkney for a two day visit to the islands, during which time the met with Stromness resident and war veteran Dr Derrick Johnstone, who is now aged 91.

Mr Pritsepov presented Dr Johnstone with a special commemorative medal and wristwatch in honour of his participation in the convoys.
