Sanday Archaeology Group in the running for Heritage Angel award

The efforts of the Sanday Archaeology Group have seen them shortlisted for an inaugural Scottish Heritage Angel Awards.

The 12-strong shortlist for the first Scottish Heritage Angel Awards, funded by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, was announced yesterday, highlighting a diverse range of voluntary activities and projects from across the country.

The Sanday Archaeology Group are nominated in the Caring and Protecting category for their volunteer-led work to safeguard the rich coastal archaeology of the island.

One of their greatest successes has been the ShoreDig Project, which saw the group rescue the threatened Meur burnt mound structure, which dates back to the Bronze Age.

Carefully removing each piece of stone from the site on the beach and transporting it across the island, the community volunteers rebuilt this stone structure near the Heritage Centre, helping to ensure its preservation for future generations.

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony on September 28.
