Young Orkney side to take on Wick Academy

Orkney’s footballers and coaching team celebrate following last weekend’s Archer Shield victory.

A 16-man Orkney football side — thought to contain nine under-21 players — is set to face Highland League side Wick Academy tomorrow afternoon.

County manager Karl Adamson was still awaiting confirmation on a couple of injury doubts for the Green Challenge Cup clash, however Stromness’s Jamie Flett and Rovers’ pair Connan Rendall and Ciaran Drever have received call-ups.

Erlend Poke, Ryan Allan, Chris Simpson, Ross Slater, and Graeme Christie all miss out after being part of the squad that lifted the Archer Shield in Caithness last weekend.

Injuries, as well as Thorfinn’s Highland Amateur Cup tie against lochdar Saints means that several players are unavailable. However, Mr Adamson said he was delighted to face Academy with the young and energetic squad he currently has at his disposal.

Wick, who finished fifth last term and won the North of Scotland Cup have Orkney midfielder James Pickles on their books and won the fixture 6-0 last season.

The proposed Orkney squad to face Wick Academy: Cameron McConnachie, Axel Bondoux, Ryan McFerran, Jamie Flett, Robbie MacVie (all Stromness), Wayne Kirkness (Dounby), Neil Aim (Firth), Joe Wilson, Owen Rendall, Jack Paterson (all Hotspurs), Daniel Hourston (Isles United), Steven Hellewell, Chris Hellewell (both Rendall), Mark Berry, Connan Rendall, and Ciaran Drever (all Rovers).

The match is scheduled to kick-off at Wick Academy’s Harmsworth Park at 2pm.
