Armed Forces Day marked in Orkney

The main event making Armed Forces Day — a parade through the centre of Kirkwall — took place today, Saturday, starting at 1pm, between the Legion and the Kirk Green.

Local uniformed organisations took part in the event, and there were also various stands set up on the Kirk Green promoting the organisations, which included youth groups. There were also speeches given on the Kirk Green.

In the evening Kirkwall City Pipe Band will play on Broad Street between 7.30pm-8pm.

Then, on Sunday, a sponsored 40 mile cycle between Kirkwall and Stromness and back will take place, setting off from the Legion at 11am. Funds raised through sponsorship for the event will be donated to the Help For Heroes charity.
