Second council by-election candidate confirmed

Birsay woman Barbara Foulkes has announced she will be standing in the OIC West Mainland by-election.

One of the ward’s four seats became vacant following the death of Alistair Gordon in May.

Mrs Foulkes, best known as the local face of VisitScotland, said: “I have been asked to stand before but this time the ask was much louder and it just seemed the time was right.

“There is no big ticket issue for me, other than having a woman elected.

“I would like to think I bring a local voice to the discussion and debate.”

The election will take place on Tuesday, August 18.

Last month, Sandwick resident Rachael King confirmed she will stand for the seat as the Orkney Manifesto Group candidate.
