DP Energy to take over Westray tidal project

DP Energy have announced they will be taking over the development of the Westray South tidal energy project from the current leaseholder SSE.

Speaking yesterday, Wednesday, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur welcomed the news. He said: “There has been considerable anxiety surrounding the future of SSE’s renewables portfolio. Today’s news that DP Energy will be taking forward the development of the Westray tidal project is therefore very welcome indeed.

“DP Energy is the largest independent developer of tidal energy in Europe, so it is very fitting that they are taking on this project. In addition, I am pleased that there will be continuity in terms of the individuals involved.

“The coming years will be crucial in determining whether or not Orkney is able to benefit fully from the wealth and job creation opportunities presented by its world class tidal resources. The announcement of DP Energy’s takeover of the Westray project is a small but important step along the way.”
