Emergency group convenes ahead of forecast severe weather

The multi-agency Orkney Local Emergency Co-ordinating Group (OLECG) met this afternoon in response to predictions of severe weather conditions on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

The Met Office issued an amber “be prepared” warning for the Northern Isles that westerly winds will gust 70 to 80 mph at times in exposed areas and will be combined with exceptionally high waves.

The environment agency SEPA also issued an amber warning for Orkney and Shetland as there is the potential for coastal flooding and wave overtopping in some coastal areas.

In Orkney areas that will be monitored include Whitehall in Stronsay, St Mary’s and St Margaret’s Hope.

Temporary Chief Inspector Gordon Deans, Police Scotland’s Area Commander for Orkney, chaired the meeting.

He said: “Through meetings like this we ensure that key agencies are prepared for eventualities linked to the weather conditions predicted over the next few days.

“As the forecast stands, there is likely to be travel disruption on ferry and air routes and possibly on the Churchill Barriers. Our advice is to keep an eye on weather forecasts and keep in touch with transport providers.”

He added: “With strong winds, there is always the possibility that some homes may be affected by a loss of power. In those circumstances, we would ask friends, family and neighbours to keep an eye on people who may be experiencing problems as a result.”

Anyone needing to contact Police Scotland should dial 101 or 999 in an emergency.
