Feast of sporting action this weekend

Orkney RFC will host Newton Stewart at Pickaquoy on Saturday afternoon.

The county’s rugby and football teams are back in action this Saturday, while Orkney’s equestrians and motocross enthusiasts are also preparing for big weekends, in a feast of sporting action.

First up is Orkney FC, who entertain Golspie Sutherland in Dounby at 12.30pm.

The home side will be looking to follow-up their emphatic opening day 5-1 victory over Halkirk United two weeks ago against a side, who, historically, have proved to be a tough outfit to crack.

Later on in the day, Orkney RFC welcome Newton Stewart to Pickaquoy for a 3pm kick off.

The two sides have experienced contrasting starts to BT National League Division 3 this season. The Dumfries and Galloway side sit second after two wins, while Orkney are winless and currently occupying bottom spot.

The home side will be determined to end that run and get their first points on the board.

Orkney’s supreme horse champion will be crowned on Saturday, as The Orcadian Peedie Horse of the Year Show is held.

The showing starts at 9am tomorrow morning, with the top three from each class progressing through to the evening extravaganza.

The evening event starts at 7pm, with doors open at 6.30pm.

The biggest event in the Orkney Motocross Club calendar is also taking place over the weekend, with the ever-popular Beach Race in Burray.

Riders from all over the country are expected for Sunday’s event, with the juniors beginning the day’s action around 9.30am. The main adult race is scheduled to begin around midday. Saturday will also see the riders racing at the Heddle Hill track in Finstown.
