Heavy rainfall leads to Parish Cup match abandonment

The first round second leg tie between Stromness and Birsay in The Orcadian Parish Cup will have to be replayed after this afternoon’s attempt was abandoned in farcical weather conditions.

A Brian Garson strike after ten minutes had put Birsay 1-0 ahead in the match, and 2-1 up on aggregate, but heavy rainfall throughout the first-half made the playing conditions treacherous for the players.

With large areas of standing water appearing all over the Market Green pitch, players slipping all over the park, and with no signs of the downpour easing, Charlie Alway made the difficult but ultimately correct decision to call the match off after 50 minutes.

Earlier in the day, Rendall became the first team to progress to the quarter-finals after a 4-1 win against Stenness in Harray. Leading 3-0 from the first leg, a Chris Hellewell hat-trick and a Derry Skea goal ensured progress for last season’s semi-finalists, while Marcus Moore got Stenness’s consolation.
