A walker on the path to the Old Man of Hoy was airlifted from the island after falling yesterday afternoon.

A Coastguard spokesman said: “At approximately 3.05pm yesterday afternoon Police Scotland advised the Coastguard that they had received a ‘999’ call from a person that had fallen on the path between Rackwick and Old Man of Hoy. The Hoy Coastguard Rescue Team and the UK Coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Sumburgh were sent to the scene.”

The casualty was then airlifted to Kirkwall Airport, where the Kirkwall Coastguard Rescue Team assisted with the landing zone and transfer at the airport.

The patient was then transferred to an ambulance and taken to the Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall.
