Island abattoirs set for more sustainable future

A new project set up by The Prince of Wales hopes to safeguard the future of abattoirs on various Scottish islands – including here in Orkney – in order to protect local agriculture, jobs and businesses.

The Sustaining Island Abattoirs in Scotland Project has been launched this week, and will provide a forum for sharing best practice, business mentoring support and funding for capital investment, as well as support for marketing local produce.

Bringing together businesses from seven Scottish islands, namely on Orkney, Shetland, Islay, Mull, Lewis, Barra, and North Uist, the new project is being led by one of the Prince’s Charities, Scottish Business in the Community, with support from the Scottish Agricultural Organisational Society, the Prince’s Countryside Fund and the Scottish Government.

Further details and local reaction in The Orcadian on Thursday.
