Kirkwall is named alongside Toulon, in France, and Port Everglades, in Miami, on the shortlist for Port of the Year in the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards for 2013.

Judged by an independent panel of experienced cruise industry specialists, the awards are regarded as among the highest accolades in the cruise sector.

This year, they will be presented, in Hamburg, at the Seatrade Europe Cruise and River Cruise Convention on Tuesday, September 24.

Councillor James Stockan, chairman of Orkney Islands Council’s development and infrastructure committee, said: “For Kirkwall to be shortlisted alongside two leading ports of international standing is a remarkable achievement.

“It reflects the considerable investment and hard work that have gone into making Orkney a must-visit destination for cruise ships. I would like to offer my congratulations to everyone involved.”
