Last minute plea for relay volunteers in Stromness

Orkney Islands Council is putting the finishing touches to arrangements for the Queen’s Baton Relay coming to Orkney – but it needs a few more helping hands in Stromness.

The Queen’s Baton Relay will be in Orkney on July 10 and 11 and will be run through Stromness, Dounby, Finstown, Kirkwall, St Mary’s and St Margaret’s Hope by 72 local, community-nominated baton bearers.

Stewards are required on the day to assist with crowd control and although the other areas of the route are now fully staffed, there is is around ten more people needed for Stromness, to ensure that the day runs smoothly.

Graeme Horne, is an education resources assistant with the council and has been helping to plan the event.

He said: “We’ve got quite an army of volunteers across the county helping out but we could just do with a few more in Stromness.  Full training will be given and it’s a great chance to play a part in a big day for the town.”

Anyone interested in helping can contact Graeme on 873535 extension 2407.
