Lighting up the night to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday
A number of beacons or bonfires will be lit across the county on Thursday evening as part of the national celebrations to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The Queen will light the “Principal Beacon” at Windsor Castle on Thursday, with others following up and down the country.
In Orkney, there will be beacons or bonfires lit at the following locations – all are open to the public:
- Evie and Rendall Community Council – Near mast, past Graemshall, Rendall, 8.30pm
- Firth Community Association – Near scrambling track, Heddle Hill, 8.30pm
- Flotta Community Council – Stanger Head, Flotta, 7.30pm
- Harray and Sandwick Community Council joint event with Birsay Community Council – Car park of St Michael’s Kirk, Harray, 8.45pm
- Sanday Community Council – Fea Brae, Sanday, 7.30pm
- Stronsay Community Association – Stronsay Community Centre, 7.15pm
- Papa Westray Community Council – By the old Pier, Papa Westray, 7.30pm
- Rotary Club of Orkney – Wideford Hill (There will be no vehicle access but the public is welcome to walk up.), 8.30pm
Bill Spence, Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney, said: “Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday will be celebrated all over the nation with over 1,000 beacons being lit on the evening of April 21.
“I am delighted to see so many community groups throughout Orkney taking part and uniting us with the rest of the country on this special occasion.”
