Local artists’ work to be shown at Pier Arts Centre
Exhibitions by two young Orkney artists will run in parallel at the Pier Arts Centre, in Stromness, this autumn. Constellations by Nick Gordon and Shaping the Void by Louise Barrington both open on Saturday, September 30 and will run until November 4.
Louise Barrington and Nick Gordon grew up in Orkney, studying in London and Aberdeen respectively, they both recently returned to the county and are among the first artists to rent space at the Stromness WASPS Studios.
Nick Gordon is interested in collecting, connecting and re-interpreting objects and materials. He assembles discarded objects, transforming them into artworks and in the process creates new stories, often tinged with a dark and surreal humour.
Louise Barrington’s work has an essentially abstract subliminal character, taking visual elements – form, line, pattern and colour and transforming them in a poetic way.
Pier Arts Centre Director Neil Firth commented “Promoting and encouraging the work of young artists and makers working in Orkney is a key part of the Pier Arts Centre’s activities.
“Both these artists have previously taken part in our bi-annual graduates exhibition and we are pleased to have the opportunity to support them again at this stage in their developing careers.”
The artists will give a tour of the exhibitions at 3pm Saturday October 14. Admission is free and no booking is required.
Constellations and Shaping the Void are on display until 4 November. The Pier Arts Centre is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30am to 5.00pm. Admission is free.
