The annual Riding of the Marches takes place tomorrow, Sunday, but follows a slightly different route to previous years.

The event will see Orkney’s Lord-Lieutenant, Bill Spence, carry the standard, escorted by Graham Bichan and Lizzie Linklater.

The procession begins in Broad Street at 2pm when Orkney Islands Council convener, Councillor Steven Heddle, will hand over the burgh standard before the procession begins.

The route around the burgh boundaries remains the same as usual, although, due to the number of tourists expected in Kirkwall, the riders will not travel through Bridge Street and Albert Street.

The organisers are reminding spectators to remain behind the safety barriers on Broad Street and to keep a safe distance at other times. Motorists encountering the horses and carriages are urged to be careful and considerate, as they have been in previous years.

The Riding the Marches was revived in 1986, when it was performed as part of the celebrations to mark the 500th anniversary of the granting of Kirkwall’s Royal Charter by King James III in 1486.
