New security equipment to be introduced at Kirkwall airport
Passengers at Kirkwall airport will soon see a change to baggage regulations as part of a £1 million investment in airport security across the Highlands and Islands.
Regulations, which come in to force on June 1, will see an upgrade to baggage and body screening.
For passengers this means that electronic devices can be left in hand luggage for screening and containers of up to two litres of liquid can be taken on hand luggage.
Passengers will still be asked to remove liquid containers from their hand luggage and containers of 100ml or less need to be placed in plastic bags and put in trays for screening.
Kirkwall airport will also receive an investment in body scanners which should enhance the security experience.
Darren MacLeod, director of safety, compliance and security at Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, said: “Our security procedures are a necessary requirement to ensure the safety of all.
“The introduction of this new equipment will further improve safety but should also mean a simpler and more straightforward security process for passengers.”
