OIC agree to consider prospect of hosting 2023 Island Games

logo-1The prospect of Orkney hosting the third biggest multi-sport event in the world took a step closer this afternoon, as Orkney Islands Council agreed to consider hosting the 2023 NatWest International Island Games.

Discussed by the education, leisure and housing committee this afternoon, councillors gave their support towards Orkney hosting the Games for the first time.

According to the report submitted to councillors, the total cost of Orkney hosting the Games is estimated at just under £1.3 million, while the Orkney Islands Games Association hopes to receive up to £800,000 from the local authority.

The report also states that holding such a large event would be a “significant boost to the local economy”, with the Isle of Wight reporting a £2-3 million boost after the 2011 Games.

In addition, it was anticipated that there would be a “significant” social and sporting impact on the local community.
