Orkney FC lost to Halkirk United in the AJG Parcels North of Scotland Cup in heartbreaking fashion this afternoon as they lost 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Steven Edwards and Graeme Horne missed their spotkicks while Halkirk converted all four to progress to the next round where they will meet Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup holders, Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The game itself was a closely fought one but one which Orkney will have been disappointed to lose after dominating most of the possession and play during the game, particularly after Halkirk had a man sent off shortly before half time. Halkirk took the lead against the run of play through a beautiful Michael Bremner volley after twenty-five minutes. However, Orkney continued to dominate possession and Thorfinn Stout finished off a lovely run by slotting the ball cooly past the Halkirk goalkeeper on the fortieth minute.

Shortly after Stout’s equaliser, Halkirk left back, Scott Davidson saw red for apparent dissent to the assistant referee. Orkney dominated play and possession in the second half as Halkirk started to sit back, hoping to hang on for penalties. Orkney’s Joe Wilson went closest with a brilliant long range strike that was tipped onto the bar by the keeper but aside from a few other half chances, Orkney will have been disappointed not to create more chances against the ten men.
