An online appeal, to help cover the cost of the public viewing platform at the Ness of Brodgar excavation site, has almost reached the half-way mark a day after its launch.

Previous years have seen the platform – an integral part of the daily site tours – sponsored by local organisations and businesses. But this year, efforts to attract sponsorship were unsuccessful, with the excavators needing to raise £2,000 to allow the platform to be erected and maintained for the duration of the six-week excavation.

At the time of writing, the appeal – which was set up by archaeologist and tour guide Caz Mamwell – has attracted £915 in donations.

The Ness of Brodgar excavations resume of July 16, with public tours beginning on July 18.
