Orkney RFC made it three wins from five games in BT National League Division 3, securing a hard-fought bonus-point win against West of Scotland at Pickaquoy this afternoon.

The home team started with a bang and were 12-0 up within 10 minutes thanks to tries from winger Craig Slater and back row Don Tualasea.

However, the visitors battled back with a try of their own on the 20 minute mark before Slater added his second, taking the score to 19-5. West of Scotland then scored a try after a fine lineout drive to keep them in touch at 19-12 going into the break.

A James Linklater penalty opened the second-half scoring, extending Orkney’s lead to 22-12, but they couldn’t shake off a determined West team who reduced the deficit to 22-19 after taking a quick penalty and catching the home defence napping.

Both sides traded tries midway through the half with Orkney’s Scott Rendall securing the bonus-point for the home team after driving over from close range.

And it was Rendall that scored again to put the result beyond doubt with five minutes to go, taking the final score to 34-24.
