Scam callers now using local phone numbers

phonePeople in Orkney are advised to be on their guard if they receive unsolicited phone calls from a number using the local dialling code.

The OIC trading standards team has recently been contacted by a number of Orkney residents who have received such calls.

According to trading standards, the callers have non-UK accents and ask for information about the age range of the people they call. They say they are not selling anything, but offer to talk about ways they can help to save money on bills.

“Sales and scam callers are now regularly using local numbers, as people are more likely to pick the phone up or call back if they recognise the dialling code,” said trading standards officer Alison Campbell.

“Consumers should always give careful consideration to answering questions over the phone as details may be sold on – resulting in an increase in sales or scam calls in future.

“Our advice is to be wary about buying goods and services as a result of an unsolicited call.”
