Sixth meets seventh as Orkney prepare for East Kilbride
Orkney RFC are hoping to bounce back from three consecutive defeats as they prepare to welcome Glasgow side, East Kilbride to Kirkwall for their ninth BT National League Division 3 fixture on Saturday. Orkney did gain two losing bonus points from three narrow defeats to Berwick, Dumfries Saints and Haddington but they will be hoping for more against a team that sit level on points and seventh in the table — one place below Orkney.
Making their first journey up to Orkney, the away side are taking a sizeable travelling support for the game with over fifty — including the team — making the journey north. Speaking in this week’s The Orcadian, club secretary Malcolm MacDonald said that East Kildbride had ambitions of winning the league at the start of the campaign but have had a “strange season” with four draws from eight games.
“We can play some good high-tempo rugby, but we’ve not managed to put on an 80-minute performance yet, so we’re hopeful it will be against Orkney that we get it together again!”
This will be the third time that Orkney have faced East Kilbride with the first occasion being in 1996/97 in Orkney’s first ever Scottish Cup tie and most recently, in 2011, in a shield game which Orkney lost 33-0.
The match is due to kick off at 2pm at Pickaquoy.
