SURF award for Community Power Orkney
Community Power Orkney (CPO) has received an award at the SURF awards for Best Practice in Community Regeneration.
CPO, which is working towards the regeneration of island communities in Orkney through the development of sustainable economic projects, was the winner of the ‘Partnership’ category.
According to SURF, CPO showed how remote island communities are using renewable energy to provide a bright economic future.
At the centre of CPO’s plans for island communities, is electricity generated from newly created wind turbines, much of which is sold to the National Grid and invested back into the communities. Five community-owned wind turbines have been built so far, with a sixth due for completion in May.
