Surface dressing update for June 13

Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 13, will see Orkney Islands Council start surface dressing on the A964, main Kirkwall/Stromness to Houton road, from Houton to Nealand Kennels.

OIC is advising that there will be a short, signed diversion via Scorrodale Road and drivers should allow an extra 20 minutes travel time.

Access to the Houton ferry terminal and Flotta workers terminal will be maintained around ferry departure and arrival times.

These works will affect public bus Service 2: Kirkwall – Houton Ferry. The 7.15am and 5:10pm services departing from Kirkwall are unaffected.

Outwith these times, the bus will not serve the Scorradale Road End to Houton, but will travel to Houton via the Scorrodale road.

Full details of how bus services are affected including route changes are available on the Council website, here.

A general reminder that:

  • Roads will be closed in both directions while surface dressing is being carried out, with closures in place from as early as 06:00 and as late as 18:00.
  • School transport buses will be escorted through the work sites.
  • Public buses will be permitted through work sites during peak hours only, before 9.30am and after 4pm).
  • Roads will be closed to all other traffic, with the exception of emergency vehicles.
