The tall ship Stavros S Niarchos is pictured visiting Stromness today, Wednesday.

The ship, which arrived last night, is operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust, formerly the Sail Training Association, a charity founded in 1956 which is dedicated to the personal development of young people through the crewing of ocean going sail training vessels.

It is the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity for young people aged 12-25.

The 197 foot long ship is rigged as an 18th Century brig, but was actually commissioned in 2000, being built at the Appledore Shipyard in Devon.

The ship can accommodate up to a maximum of 69 crew and trainees.
