The council wants to see your baton pictures

Orkney gave the Queen’s Baton Relay a very warm welcome this week.

Hundreds of folk came out to cheer on 72 community nominated batonbearers as the baton was carried through Stromness, Dounby, Finstown, Kirkwall, St Mary’s and St Margaret’s Hope on Thursday and Friday.

Social media was in full swing throughout the event as the OIC, the police, the Baton Relay team and the public took to Twitter and Facebook to share their photos and videos.

The council is now looking to gather some of these photos in order to create a commemorative record.

Karen Greaves, the OIC’s head of leisure and lifelong learning, said: “The whole day couldn’t have gone better really.  The sun shone for the most part and the crowds were really enthusiastic.  The planning of the event has been hard work but it really has been worth it, with stunning images of Orkney at its very best beamed right across the world through social media and on the BBC’s live feed.

“There were lots of folk out with their cameras on the day and there would have been a lot of cracking shots taken.  We want to take the opportunity to capture as many of these as we can in one place and produce a lively record of what was a very memorable day.”

If you would like to share your photos or videos then they can be emailed to the council at communications@orkney.gov.uk
