The Orkney Sports Awards are back!

OrkneySportsAwardsLS1CIt has been announced this week that the Orkney Sports Awards are back and the reshaped and revamped awards are better than ever!

Orkney Islands Council, in partnership with Sportscotland and The Orcadian, have announced that the Awards will provide people with the opportunity to recognise both individuals and teams that participate in sport locally, regionally and nationally, including athletes, coaches and volunteers at an awards ceremony in Kirkwall Grammar School on Friday, January 22, 2016.

Councillor Harvey Johnston, chair of the Council’s Education, Housing and Leisure committee, said: “The Orkney Sports Awards for 2015 is going to be a fantastic event, but we need the public’s help for nominations. Nominees can be anyone who you feel had a successful year and have given 100% effort to their sport.”

In the first sports awards ceremony in almost a decade, the nominations are open to the public and fall under nine categories:

  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • Junior Team of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Young Volunteer of the Year
  • Technical Official of the Year
  • School Sports Volunteer of the Year

Nominations can be submitted by filling in the form in this week’s The Orcadian, by emailing active-schools@orkney.gov.uk or telephone 01856 873535 ext 2441. You can also find information and the nomination form on www.orkney.gov.uk. Nominations can also be sent to the Active Schools Facebook page, the OIC Updates Facebook page or using Twitter with the hashtag #OrkneySportsAwards and post to @orkneycouncil. Please include name and category when making nominations.

Mr Johnston added: “2015 has been a phenomenal year for sport. From the gripping Parish Cup to the well-deserved medals won in the Island Games, there’s no end to sports related successes. There are also many people involved in sport behind the scenes that give support to the athletes and who are completely dedicated. The coaching, volunteering and technical official awards are a perfect opportunity to give recognition and thank those unsung heroes.

“We hope that the Orkney sporting community, and anyone with connection to sport, will get behind these awards and get their nominations in.”

A panel of judges, which will include representatives from various organisations knowledgeable on sport in Orkney, will review the nominations to a final three for each category. All nominees, or their representatives, will be invited to attend the ceremony. Winners will be announced at the awards evening which will be hosted by the Council’s Active Schools team.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, December 11 at 5pm.
