Police Scotland have today confirmed they issued “safety advice” to Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael, following what is being reported as a death threat being sent to his local constituency office.
Alistair Carmichael’s office has confirmed that the “threatening letter” was related to the recent vote on Syrian air strikes.

A police spokesman said: “Police in Orkney are carrying out enquiries following reported items of communications being sent to the office of local member of parliament, on Thursday, December 10, 2015. Inquiries are continuing and suitable safety advice has been provided.” Police refused to go into further detail about the letter.

A spokesperson from the parliamentary office of Alistair Carmichael issued a statement saying: “A threatening letter related to the recent vote on Syrian air strikes was sent to one of the constituency offices, and was immediately reported to police. These kind of comments are abhorrent and it’s only right that the police investigate who is behind them.”
