Three Orkney residents have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2015.

John Muir, from Holm, and Bashir Hasham, from Orphir, are both recipients of the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Mr Muir, who was a founder of Macmillan Orkney and is a long-standing member of the Italian Chapel preservation committee, receives his medal  in recognition of his voluntary work in the county.

Mr Hasham’s award is for services to the community. The first locally based registered Samaritan, Mr Hasham went on to chair the local board. He is also a director of Voluntary Action Orkney and has been involved with the Rotary Club of Orkney for many years.

Former Sanday school headteacher Rosemary Newton received an MBE for services to outdoor education and to the community in Orkney.
