Volunteers urgently required for Children’s Panel

With the deadline for applications fast approaching, an urgent appeal has been issued for Children’s Panel volunteers in Orkney.

Locally, four new panel members are needed this year to ensure the system can continue to offer the best possible support to vulnerable children and young people. Locals who live or work in the area are being urged to apply by tomorrow, September 25, if they think they have what it takes to help vulnerable children and young people.

Panel members play a crucial role in helping youngsters who face serious problems in their lives, such as being neglected, failing to attend school or committing an offence.

Applicants must be over 18 and have a genuine interest in helping vulnerable children and young people, but no qualifications are required and full training is provided.

Boyd McAdam, National Convener and Chief Executive, Children’s Hearings Scotland, said: “As the deadline for new volunteers to apply to the national Children’s Panel approaches, we are urging people in Orkney to get their applications in.

“No two panel members are the same.  We’re looking for a variety of people of different ages and from different backgrounds.  We don’t need people with specialist skills, simply those who have empathy and can communicate with children, young people and families.

“If you think you could be that person, then I’d urge you to apply ahead of the deadline.  It won’t just change a child’s life, it’ll change yours too.”
