Whit’s on this weekend?
It’s that time of year where everything winds down, but that’s not to say there’s nothing to do at all. If you’re at a loss for what to do this weekend, have no fear! The Orcadian is here with a couple of peedie suggestions…
Making Noise Against Suicide
A special gig, aimed at raising suicide and mental health awareness in the community is set to take the stage at The Neuk (formerly Matchmakers) this Saturday night, January 20.
Organised by Anna Mackay and Theo Ogbhemhe, Making Noise Against Suicide will see performances from four local acts, as well as some special visitors from London. With free admission, the idea is that adults from all around the community can join together to show their support for those suffering from these issues.
“Given the tragic events that have been happening in Orkney the last year or so, I think being in such a small community makes it all the more hard-hitting and sad for everyone,” Anna explained.
“Both Theo Ogbhemhe and I felt that Orkney really needed some kind of event, to kick-start other awareness events which we hope to have happening throughout this year, and in memory of those we have sadly lost in the Orkney community through depression and suicide.”
With doors opening at 7.30pm, the line-up for the night includes local acts Electric Mother, The Usual Suspects, and Ray O’Neill. The evening is also set to see performances from London-based artists Nysflo and Jetplay, with Theo Ogbhemhe acting as compere for the gig.
 Quizzes Galore
If you’re stuck for something to do with the kids this weekend, why not get a team together, settle into the warmth of your nearest local and get your thinking caps on for a good old pub quiz.
Tonight, Friday, Dementia Friendly Orkney will be hosting a fundraising quiz night at the Merkister Hotel, Harray, starting at 7.30pm.
If you fancy your chances, you can head along to Firth Football Club’s Pub Quiz at the Pomona on Saturday night, starting at 7.30pm.
Sunday brings another chance to show off your general knowledge, with a pub quiz hosted by Orkney Athletics Club set to take place at the St Ola Hotel, Kirkwall.
Orkney Acts @ Celtic Connections
If you happen to be in and around the Central Belt, this weekend, you’ll have a chance to check out some of your favourite local musicians. The first big date on the Scottish folk calendar is now in full swing, as a host of acts from all over the world take to the stage on Glasgow for the 25th Celtic Connections.
Acts playing the festival include some familiar Orkney names, with some of our finest homegrown folkies in attendance.
It all kicked of last night, Thursday, with a 25th anniversary concert. This saw a performance from local favourites Saltfishforty. As well as having the honour of playing this gig, the duo also took the stage at the Mitchell Theatre the following night.
Sunday saw a performance from one of our biggest up and coming Orkney expats, Marianne MacGregor. After winning a Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at last year’s festival, Marianne secured a space in the spotlight for this year’s shindig, playing on the same bill as the Boo Hewerdine Band at the Tron Theatre.
But there’s plenty more fabulous folk fun left to come, with homegrown band Fara all set to play at St Andrews in the Square, next Saturday night, February 3.
