Delays possible after ferry develops technical fault

A mechanical fault affecting the North Isles ferry Varagen could result in disruption to sailing times, according to Orkney Ferries.

The fault has developed in the Varagen’s bow thruster.

This does not affect normal sailing operations, but does cause additional challenges when berthing and leaving pier linkspans.

The company’s manager, Fraser Murray, said: “It means that this operation can take longer than usual to carry out and, in windy conditions, it makes it far more difficult to manoeuvre the vessel.

“We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption, but are advising customers that there could be delays or cancellations when the weather is poor until the fault is repaired.”

This requires a replacement part to be manufactured to the standard required for a passenger vessel and Orkney Ferries currently estimates it will take around 10 weeks for repairs to be completed.

In the meantime, the company is exploring other options to see if a shorter-term solution can be found.
