Island flavour to new KGS house names

Following a ballot of staff, pupils and parents, the theme going forward for the new house names at Kirkwall Grammar School is uninhabited isles.

As part of the ongoing restructure of the guidance system, the school is moving from the six houses to three new houses.

Three themes were put forward for the vote — Norse gods/Norse names, uninhabited islands and Orkney wildlife.

Votes were cast on Friday, with Norse names beaten by four votes (562 compared to 566 for island names). Orkney wildlife secured 121 votes.

The final vote for the names will take place on March 11 and will involve all pupils and staff.
