McArthur raises Ortak concerns in parliament
Yesterday, Wednesday, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur raised concerns with ministers regarding the future of local jewellery company Ortak.
It was announced last week that a buyer had not been found for the business which went into administration in March, last year.
Speaking after what was described as a constructive exchange with enterprise minister, Fergus Ewing at Finance Questions, Mr McArthur said: “I have been in close contact with the minister and HIE since the recent announcement by Ortak’s administrators that a single buyer for the company had not been found.
“Last week, the First Minister gave me a commitment that every effort would be made to support the staff affected and facilitate any viable bid to safeguard jobs at the Hatston site.
“Today I was able to reinforce with the minister the importance in particular of the manufacturing jobs, which are under threat. Â As I made clear, these jobs are important not just to Ortak but to many other small, local jewellery businesses who rely on the Ortak facility for castings as other work.
“Mr Ewing acknowledged this point and restated the Scottish government’s determination to do what it can to assist. Â I welcome that reiteration, which I know will be appreciated by staff at Ortak at this very difficult time.”
