New era for Birsay folk as new hall opens its doors

After ten years of fundraising, the new Birsay Community Hall was officially opened at the weekend, with an inaugural dinner dance on Saturday night and an open day on Sunday.

Caroline Atkinson, secretary of the community association, said: “The opening of the new hall means that we now have a great venue in Birsay for folk in the community to use for all sorts of activities and events.”

The new hall is a major upgrade from the building it replaces, which dates from around 1947.

The main hall has acoustic panelling to ensure good sound quality during concerts and other events. The stage at one end is backed by modern, well-equipped dressing rooms.
