New exhibition marks museum reopening

The Orkney Museum has a new exhibition to mark its reopening after a major refurbishment.

Reynold Eunson: Craftsman and Artist in Wood tells the story of the Kirkwall joiner and cabinetmaker who, with the encouragement of the renowned artist Stanley Cursiter, discovered a talent for wood carving.

Reynold Eunson famously produced the panels and carvings found in the St Rognvald Chapel in the east end of St Magnus Cathedral.

A range of Eunson’s wood work will be on display, from Orkney chairs and stools to fine pieces of carving and the sign for the Georgian Bar of the Kirkwall hotel. Also on display will be drawings and designs by the craftsman which take pride of place alongside those of Stanley Cursiter.

All the items on display come from the private collection of Reynold Eunson’s daughter, Maria Morris, and many are seen in public for the first time.

‘Reynold Eunson: Craftsman and Artist in Wood’ will run at the Orkney Museum until the 31st August. The museum is open from 10.30am – 50pm Monday – Saturday and admission is free.
