Registration reminder for B&B owners

Bed and breakfast providers in Orkney are being reminded that they need to register as food businesses with the OIC.

Pat Pearson, from the council’s environmental health team, said: “It sometimes comes as a surprise that bed and breakfasts are considered as food businesses which need to be registered with us.

“Like all food businesses, we need to check periodically that they are complying with food hygiene legislation. This can involve a visit by one of our team. We always do this for new bed and breakfast businesses so we can help them ensure their kitchens, and the systems they have in place, are suitable for safe food preparation.

“For more established businesses these routine inspections can involve alternative arrangements, such as a food hygiene questionnaire.”

All food businesses are asked to complete a form to register with the council. There is no fee and copies can be posted to businesses on request.
